Balancing anything is a struggle. Just try walking a tightrope without a safety net.
However, harmonizing is easier. You may need to get used to it, perhaps get some coaching as well. But once you catch a harmony, you are good to go.
Work Life Harmonies. That's the way to go.
Balancing implies that there are two or more forces competing for all your energy and you are trying to give them enough of you to keep things going. If that is our outlook of life, we will be in an eternal struggle to stay sane while juggling, or even worse, balancing all these forces and priorities.
Harmonizing is very different. In a song, there are different stages where one piece of music, or vocals, are heard louder than others, because that's what the song is trying to express. Sometimes the song has quiet strings or a warm pad, which seems to fade into the background when the piano plays the introductory melody notes. And then the vocals introduce the first verse of the song, leading to the chorus with other backing vocals joining in. There might be a refrain where the song calms down, and then builds up to a crescendo with all instruments and voices coming in full force.
Life is very much like a song. Sometimes its a quiet piano solo, other times its a loud and complex prog-rock epic. The only way to get through is to harmonize with all the ebbs and flows. Its OK to have some aspects of work take the main stage for a while without compromising important aspects of family life. And then there might be instances where you have to keep work aside like a background voice, while a personal priority needs your attention like a soprano aria.
What determines the harmony? Priority! Keep your priorities right and your life-song will have the best harmonies ever. If the harmonies get out of synch, look at your priorities and get them in the right order. The harmonies will sound sweet again.
